Keeping Internal Peace When The World is on Fire
The LegalMind Society shares the horror expressed by so many around the world at the violent attack carried out by Hamas terrorists this past week. We also share the concern of so many at the danger the war between Hamas and Israel creates for the millions of innocent civilians trapped in harm’s way. Indeed, this round of violence, while more intense than we’ve seen in decades, is the latest chapter of a bloody history in the region. This outbreak occurs as the war between Ukraine and Russia drags on and political partisanship threatens progress around the country and around the world. And with so much going on, it is easy to ask how one can maintain internal peace when the world is on fire.
It is natural for us to want to stay informed about the goings on around the world. Yet in a world where the news operates with an “if it bleeds, it leads” mentality, this connection to the news can be harmful for our mental health. This brings up an important first point, which is that it is okay to turn off the news if you need a break.
Secondly, it is important to remember what you can control and what you can’t. You can’t control the actions of terrorists half a world away. Yet if you want to feel involved you can help by donating to non-governmental organizations that are focused on missions in the region that you support. That is something you can control.
Lastly, it is important to know that there is support out there. Mental health hotlines, warm lines, therapy, and peer support like the program offered by The LegalMind Society are all resources that can be utilized. We know that weeks like this past one can be challenging for people for many reasons. We’ve been through those challenges, and we can help.
