ACE Lawyers
When most people think about aces, they think about the staff’s best, whether that is an ace pitcher on a baseball team or an ace litigator in a law firm. However, in the mental health world aces can mean something else. Adverse childhood experiences.
When some people hear that term, they think of severe childhood trauma. And while that certainly qualifies, it can be many smaller forms of trauma, from emotional neglect, to bullying, to the loss of a loved one at an early age. As we grow, these adverse childhood experiences can stay with us, impacting our mental health and emotional growth. Indeed, some of our maladaptive habits as adults can have deep roots in our childhood.
These ACEs can make anyone more at-risk for mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Therapy and other forms of mental health treatment can manage those symptoms, but too often lawyers go into the riggers and stressors of law school and the legal profession without addressing these issues. And that can be like pouring gasoline on a fire.
While the LegalMind Society offers peer support, not therapy, we know what it can be like to unpack these ACEs. We can support legal professionals as they work with trained therapists to recover and live a healthier life. We can share some of the tools we’ve used in our own recoveries and help you get back to being the ace lawyer you want to be.
