Being A Recovery Support Specialist

In my current work with NAMI, I act as a recovery support specialist. While that might sound like a strange term, especially to someone new to mental health care, it just means I have lived experience and I use that experience to support others. It is the same thing we do here at the LegalMind Society through our individual and group support sessions. Basically, it means we’ve walked this path, and we can help you navigate it too.

It certainly presents some challenges. Finding the right balance between telling your own story and letting others tell theirs, for example. It also highlights the need to take care of yourself, so that you can better support others.

Yet one of the great things about being a recovery support specialist is that it offers mutual benefits. Often, supporting an individual who is just starting out in their recovery offers me a fresh perspective on my own recovery. And we are a social species. When we support others, we also are practicing a form of self-care that we can be grateful for.

And in order for The LegalMind Society to grow its support programs, we need people who are living well with mental illness, who are open about their story, and are passionate about ending the stigma surrounding mental illness in the legal profession to partner with us and keep this conversation going.

If that is something that interests you, please reach out to info@thelegalmindsociety.org.

And in the meanwhile, be well. And thanks for reading.
