Men’s Mental Health Month
This month is Men’s Mental Health Month. And as I will explain below, this is an important message for men to hear.
It is important because, while it is true that mental health impacts both men and women, the statistics show that men are far less likely to seek help for their mental health challenges. While there are many factors, some of the common culprits experts point to are that men don’t want to show weakness, men are taught they shouldn’t be emotional, or men just aren’t taught how to identify the emotions that they do have.
And some of these challenges are exacerbated by a field such as law, where there is already a heightened stigma that might lead individuals to feel like they must hide their struggles.
Instead, society and the legal profession tells these men that they must be machines, working long hours if they want to climb the ladder at their firm and be the breadwinner that society tells them they should be. It is true that that messaging is starting to change, but too many men still fall for it.
We at the LegalMind Society understand that. We hear all the time how hard it is is for male attorneys to open up. And speaking personally, it sounds all too familiar. Yet I can say from first hand experience how beneficial it has been to seek support. And if you are looking for support yourself, know that you will find confidential, trauma-informed peer support from The LegalMind Society.
